Star
of the second leg Chris Tupper
The
2001 final of the league champions cup was drawn and the Dyke were more than
happy to go to the Stadium for the first leg of the final. Should the match
result end in a 5-5 draw then the play-off would be on their table, and not the
ever high scoring Stadium top. Match 1
and the Stadium were not best pleased with the draw, having both Mark James and
Steve Mariner out with the break. No shocks as the match went 3-2 to the
Stadium, but they feared it wasn’t going to be enough, 4-1 would have been a
bigger cushion. Match 2 at the
Dyke, and the Stadium were hoping for Steve, Mark and Jim to come out with the
breaks, only Steve did and the vital game was Kev Simmons v Jim Millward. Jim
came out on top and the match swung heavily into the Stadium’s favour, as they
had 3 breaks to come. Steve Mariner then saw off Colin Smith and the Stadium
needed 1 more leg for the trophy. Tony Lewis played an agonising leg with Mick
Winder, neither seeming to want to win, however someone had to and it was Mick
who pulled the Dyke back into the match. Next saw the Dyke’s No.1 Chris Tupper
who played the table superbly to start with 8k giving Mark James no chance.
Suddenly it wasn’t looking so rosy for the Stadium, still needing 1 leg for
victory. In leg 5 Martin Smith took out a peg early on, and Dave Reeves put up
nearly 5k which Martin couldn’t catch. So the Dyke had earned a decider, they
weren’t Brighton champions for nothing!. Before the match had started it must
be decided by the captains who would take the decider should one be needed. The
Dyke chose Chris and the Stadium chose Steve. It was Steve to start, but the
inconsistent roll caught him out and he pushed the red behind on the split and
couldn’t get the break back. Balls were returned for Chris who did the same as
Steve on his first split, pushing the red behind. Chris was able to retrieve the
break but soon did the same with the split, pushing the red behind the 50 hole
again, it was a head scratcher! Nevertheless Chris kept at it and his dogged
determination saw him roll up on 8k to snatch the title away from the Stadium. A
very enjoyable match!
