Sussex News – 2011 Issue Number 4
As another year draws to a close, we look forward to the time of year that we can all eat and drink a bit too much….. although that is quite normal behaviour for many of us anyway!! The latest Rankings and all of the Inter League Results, Tables and Averages are all on the website, which just leaves me to wish everybody a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
The first game of this years Sussex Individual Competitions was played on Friday 30th December at the Watermill in Burgess Hill and saw Dave Ingram progress to the Quarter-Finals of the Captain’s Cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Chris Haynes from Eastbourne in what will probably be the last competitive game of the year in Sussex…. J
Brighton A retain top spot in Division 1 of the Inter League competition thanks to a good 5-2 away win against Tunbridge Wells. Dave Ingram (8,510) and Richard Wooton (13,970) got the visitors off to a great start and although Doug Phillips (9,000) pulled a game back for the home team, wins for Kevin Hall (10,500), Steve Mariner (16,430) and Nigel Senior (14,800) ensured that the leaders maintained their 100% start to the season, leaving Pete Sainsbury to hit the highest score of the night (18,480) in consolation. Worthing A moved up to second place with a close 4-3 away win against Worthing B at the Swan. Adam Squires (10,210) gave the home team a good start, but wins for Jim Greensted (8,290) and Rick Dewdney (13,060) put the visitors in the lead. Paul Barnett (10,250) levelled the match again and when Dave France (7,380) won the next game it looked as if the B Team might cause a shock but Martin Smith (7,430) levelled the game and Kevin Tunstall (13,050) took the decider against the break. Redhill A returned to winning ways with a good 5-2 win away against bottom team Mid-Sussex A, although Adam Bateup (18,800) gave the home team the perfect start with the highest score of the season so far. Geoff Jukes (8,110) and Gary Powell put the visitors in front and although Richard Jeffrey levelled the match wins for Dave Constable (10,980), Terry Oakley and Colin Robbins (7,140) gave Redhill A the points.
With the matches between Horsham v Littlehampton and Redhill B v Eastbourne both being postponed it gave Brighton B the chance to extend their lead at the top of Division 2 and they took full advantage of this with a good 5-2 win away to Worthing C at The Gardeners, although that result seemed unlikely when Steve Aylmore and Pete Brown (5,190) put the home team 2-0 up! But wins for Jean Brackenridge (7,420), Ryan Berrett, Bella Stoner (5,790), Terry Molloy (11,320) and Marc Chipman won the evening for the visitors in what will sadly probably be the last match played at this venue which is due to close early in the New Year.
Lewes upset the Division 3 form book to inflict a first defeat on leaders Hastings in a low scoring encounter at the Bridge in Newhaven. Jan Bithell and Colleen Park won the first two games for the home team and although Mike Daw (6,570) hit the best score of the night to pull the visitors back into the game, Dave Knight won the next game to put the home team 3-1 up. Wins for Sandy Harmer and Dave White forced the decider which was won by Ric Bithell to give Lewes their first win of the season. Billingshurst moved level on points with Hastings at the top of the League with a 4-3 win over West Sussex at the Limeburners. Gary Evans got the visitors off to a winning start only for Ding Johnson to level the match. Simon Mills put the visitors in front again before Tony Temple (8,080) hit the best score of the night. Martin Cole (5,330) gave the visitors the lead again, but wins for Barry Dumbrill and Chip Sawyer meant that the points went to the home side. Brighton C move up the third place with a comfortable 5-2 win over bottom side Mid-Sussex B at the Atlas. Steve Hurley (9,490) started the evening well for the home side with the best score of the night and although Trevor Rees levelled the match wins for Matthew Knight and Brian Muggeridge put the home team in control. Visiting Captain Richard Spurrier pulled one leg back but Matt Adatepe (5,570) sealed the win in the best game of the night against Paul Moyes-Robb who was unlucky to lose with the best away score (5,130) of the night and Mick Pope (5,120) put the icing on the cake for the home team in the last game.
The draws for the Sussex Individual Competitions took place at the Atlas in Hove on Wednesday 14th December and are now shown in the “Individual Competitions” section of the Website and also on the Proboards Forum. The Mens and Ladies Doubles will be held at the Hurst Club in Hurstpierpoint on Saturday 7th January 2012 with the Mens and Ladies Singles taking place on Sunday 8th January 2012 at the same venue. Good luck to everybody taking part.
Worthing A moved into second place in Division 1 with a good 4-3 win over Redhill A at the Old Oak in their re-arranged Series 2 match. Martin Smith (12,760) and Ian Lelliott (11,750) got the visitors off to a flying start and although Geoff Jukes (12,130) and Gary Powell (8,930) levelled the match, wins for Roger Taylor (10,050) and Kevin Tunstall (10,050 to beat Terry Oakley’s 7,280) sealed the points for the defending champions leaving Laurie Roberts (7,800) to take a consolation last leg for the home team.
Brighton A maintained their 100% start to the Inter League Season with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Mid-Sussex A at the Duke of Wellington. Kevin Hall (9.650) put the home in front and Steve Mariner (10,320) quickly doubled the lead and although Henry Brooks (13,740) pulled a game back for the visitors wins for Dave Ingram (7,650) and Jim Millward made sure of the points leaving Richard Wooton (12,200) and Dave Reeves (9,230) to finish the evening off in style. Worthing A gained their first victory of the season with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Tunbridge Wells at the New Sussex Hotel. Barry Holt (11,760) gave the home team the perfect start and wins for Ian Lelliott, Neil Higgins (8,990) and Rick Dewdney made sure of the points for the home team and although Richard Corbould won a consolation leg for the visitors, Kevin Tunstall and Jim Greensted completed the night in style for the defending champions. Worthing B moved up to third place in the league thanks to a close 4-3 win away to Redhill A. Geoff Jukes (13,630) got the home team off to a good start and although Adam Squires levelled the game, wins for Cliff Wayland (6,090) and Dave Constable (6,320) won the next two games to put the home side in control. Paul Barnett (8,540) and Bill Kerr (6,710) won the next two to force the decider which Dave France (10,570) won against Terry Oakley (5,070).
In Division 2, Littlehampton closed the gap on the leaders Brighton B and Horsham with a good 5-2 win over bottom team Redhill B at the Locomotive. Wins for Paul Olver (5,440), Alan Messer (8,440) and Dave Hampton (10,740) swept the home team into a 3-0 lead and although Richard Plaw pulled a game back for the visitors, Steve Beach (9,690) made sure of the points. Genette Nicholls (8,680) hit the best score of the night for the visitors before Bill Harrison sealed the last to keep the home team smiling. Worthing C also moved on to four points with second win running thanks to a close 4-3 win away to Eastbourne. Chris Turner won a tight first game to put the home side in front and Colin Southouse (10,190) doubled the lead with the best score of the match. Pete Brown dragged the away team back into the match and wins for Dave Jones (5,230), Rick Cunningham (7,690) and Colin Green gave the visitors the points before Dave Smith (6,350) took a consolation leg for the home team.
In Division 3, leaders Hastings won their third game in a row with a close 4-3 victory over Brighton C at the Ashburnham Arms. Mike Daw (5,860) and Phil Osbourne (7,450) got the home side off to a good start and although Brian Muggeridge pulled a game back for the visitors, Roy Harmer (9,310) promptly put the home team 3-1 up. Matthew Knight (6.390) and Sheena Wood levelled the match but Dave White (9,020) sealed the decider for the home team. West Sussex also maintained their 100% record with a 6-1 victory over Lewes at the Wickham Arms and have a game in hand over the leaders. Declan Dynes (6,100) gave the home side the lead only for Ric Bithell to level the score next game. But that was to be the visitors only success of the evening as Martin Cole (7,140), Gary Evans (7,000),Kevin Charlton, Tim Cole (7,550) and Simon Mills (6,010) swept the home team to victory. Bilingshurst move up to second place after a crushing 6-1 victory away to Mid-Sussex B who remain rooted to the bottom of the table. Wins for Mick Johnson, Tony Temple and Chip Sawyer (8,570) quickly put the visitors into a strong position and although Trevor Rees pulled one game back for the home team, Steve Eely (5,950), Steve Holden and Keith Newman made sure that the visitors had a happy journey home with the points.
The first set of draws for the Sussex Individual Competitions were made at the Bridge in Newhaven on Monday 5th December and the draws and venues for the Sussex Mixed Doubles, Captains Cup and Over 50’s Competitions are now all on the website in the Individual Competitions Section. Good luck to everybody taking part in those and a brief reminder that entries for the Sussex Men’s and Ladies Doubles Competitions should be with Competition Secretary Tony Jenner by the end of this week as the draws will be made next week.
The AEBBA AGM was held at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 4th December and the England Team was announced for the Internationals against Jersey and Guernsey in 2012. Kevin Tunstall remains as Captain and was one of five Sussex players selected along with Nigel Senior, Ian Lelliott, Rick Dewdney and Richard Wooton with the rest of the team being Steven Sheard, Phil Collins, Leon Beer, Mark Trafford (all Oxon), Paul Sainsbury (Berks), Curt Driver (Kent) and Tony Woolvin (Hants). Martin Smith and Dave Ingram were named as the two reserves.
Some new dates for AEBBA Tournaments were announced and these are shown at the bottom of this News Letter.
The National Season came to a conclusion with the AEBBA Grand Prix and Ladies Grand Prix Competitions that were played at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 20th November. Phil Collins (Oxon) won the Open Grand Prix beating Steven Sheard (Oxon) in the Final after Phil ran the table out for 18,070 and Steven broke down on just over 5k in his reply before conceding. In the semi-finals, Phil made the highest break of the day (21,080) to beat Kevin Tunstall and Steven took advantage of an early mistake to beat Cuirt Driver (Kent).
There had been a lot of high scores all day throughout the Group Stages with Kevin Tunstall winning all three of his games to win Group A ahead of Leon Beer (Oxon, 2 wins), Nigel Senior (1 win) and Tony Webster (Hants). Steven Sheard dominated Group B with 3 wins and an average of 13,655 ahead of Dave Ingram (2 wins), Lorin Clough (Northants, 1 win) and Gerry Fitzjohn (Kent). Group C was won by Curt Driver (Kent) who won all 3 of his games against Paul Barnett (2 wins), Rick Dewdney (1 win) and Martin Smith while Phil Collins won Group D with 2 wins on aggregate from Dennis Atkins (Oxon, 2 wins), Tony Woolvin (Hants, 1 win) and Keith Sheard (Oxon) who also had 1 win.
Pauline Withey completed a good day for Oxon winning the Ladies Grand Prix beating Denise Wills (Surrey) in the Final. Pauline had lost her first game of the day in Group A, but recovered well to win her final 2 games to finish ahead of Debz Pearse (Surrey) on aggregate and Genette Nicholls (Surrey) and Sandra Race who both won 1 game each. Denise had won a very tight Group B with 2 wins on aggregate ahead of Myra Hawkins (Berks) and Jenny Florey (Oxon) who also both had 2 wins, with Alison Norman (Surrey) losing all 3 of her matches. Denise did take some consolation from winning the Ladies High Break Award with 6,220 in her win against Alison in their Group match.
One Inter League Series 3 match was also played early on Sunday 20th November and Brighton B emerged as 4-3 winners in their top of Division 2 clash against Horsham at the Albion. Alan Brackenridge (11,460) started the evening well for the home team and although Clive Thompson (7,670) levelled the match straight away, wins for Jean Brackenridge (6,680) and Bella Stoner (6,900) put the home team into a strong position. Dave Howlett and Adam Kuzimski (9,180) pulled the visitors back to all-square, but Terry Molloy (9,600) held his break to give the points to Brighton B.
Sussex B continued the counties excellent run in the AEBBA Competitions by winning Division 2 of the Open County Championships at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 20th November. Despite losing their first game 4-3 to Berks B, a close 4-3 win over Kent B put them straight back into contention and a 6-1 victory over Northants was followed up with a 5-2 win over Bucks giving Sussex B a two point lead going into the last series of games against nearest rivals Surrey A. Wins for Neil Higgins and Dave Ingram made the score 2-2 going into the last 3 games and a win for Rick Dewdney made sure of the title despite losing the match 4-3 overall. Rick ended up top of the Division 2 Averages with 5 wins out of 5, while Dave France, Henry Brooks, Jim Greensted, Dave Ingram and Neil Higgins all won 3 games and Kevin Hall grabbed a useful point when top-scoring in the win over Northants. The victory means that Sussex B will be playing in Division 1 again next season, against the reigning champions Sussex A…!!
Redhill A finally started their Inter League Division 1 campaign with a 4-3 win away to Tunbridge Wells at the Constitutional Club. Tony Cross got the visitors off to a good start winning the first game against the break and Geoff Jukes (10,970) quickly doubled their lead. Doug Phillips (7,750) pulled one game back and then Pete Sainsbury hit big (17,890) top level the match only to see Terry Oakley (6,740) and Gary Powell (7,660) claim the win for the visitors leaving Martin Russell (8,680) to win the last leg in consolation for the home team. Worthing B also claimed their first victory of the season with a close 4-3 home win at The Swan against Mid-Sussex A. Mal Spier (6,130) got the home team off to a good start and although Henry Brooks knocked in the best away score of the season so far (17,530) to level the match, wins for Gary Ridley (6,060) and Paul Barnett (5,890) gave the home team a 3-1 lead. Rob Hall (5,700) and Derek Taylor made it all square but Adam Squires (7,890) played a good last leg to send the visitors home empty handed.
Unfortunately the AEBBA Mixed Pairs that was due to be played at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 13th November was cancelled again due to lack of support.
More than 60 players from Sussex made the annual pilgrimage to Jersey for the World Championships which were played at the Merton Hotel in St Helier, Jersey, over the weekend of 4-6th November. The new format of Groups for the first round of the competition seemed to work very well although this possibly meant that there were fewer “shock results” in the early stages and most of the stronger players emerged from their Groups into the main competition as either winners or “best runners-up” to make it into the live for the last 64.
Kevin Tunstall was one of the beneficiaries of the new format as he made history becoming the first player to win the World Title having lost a game with Mark James beating him in the Group stages, however having qualified for the knock out stages he then maintained his superb form this season to gain his 4th World Title and 7th Individual title this year beating Steven Sheard (Oxon) in a close final. Steve Mariner reached the semi-finals for the second year running and Curt Driver (Kent) was the other losing semi-finalist. Paul Barnett completed a superb weekend for himself by reaching the quarter-finals, with Nigel Senior, James Jeanne and Nigel Ryall (both Jersey) also losing at that stage. Defending champion Jim Millward lost to Nigel Senior in the Last 32, with Terry Race, Marcus Chipman, Martin Smith, Barry Holt, Mark James, Gareth Lloyd and Roger Taylor also falling at that stage while Adam Squires, Terry Coghlan, Phil Oakley, Adam Bateup, Alan Brackenridge, Dave Ingram, Micky Fairs, Chris Tupper, Neil Higgins, Dave Hampton, Rob Hall and Lorraine Hall all reaching the last 64, with Lorraine also winning the new “Gina Sherratt Trophy” for winning her Group. Sue Mariner and Colleen Park won the Ladies High Break Awards, with Sue and Sandra Race taking the Ladies High Score Trophies.
Sue Mariner kept up her good form from the Group stages by reaching the Plate Final, losing to Bernie McCluskey (Berks) in the Final while Tony Jenner and Geoff Jukes were the losing semi-finalists. Brian Richards, Lorenzo Hickman, Harry Barbet and Dave Jones (Jersey) were the quarter-finalists with Jean Brackenridge losing in the Last 16 and Colleen Park, Paul Bramhall and Darrell Skinner all reaching the last 32 of the Plate.
Bernie McCluskey and Paul Sainsbury (Berks) are the new World Pairs Champions as they beat Paul Barnett and Neil Higgins in a close final having beaten Barry Holt and Phil Oakley in the semi-finals, with Curt Driver and Mark Brewster (Kent) the other semi-finalists. The surprise package in the Pairs were Ian Thomas who partnered Dave Perrier (Jersey) and reached the quarter-finals, with Steve Mariner and Jim Millward, Nigel Senior and Marcus Chipman and Chris Saville (Kent) and Nick Barnett (Jersey) also falling at that stage of the competition. Dick Cable and Micky Fairs and Colleen Park and Dave Ingram also reached the Last 16.
Brighton A continue to set the pace at the top of Division 1 of the Inter League Competition with a 7-0 home win over Worthing B at the Bib & Tucker on Sunday 30th October. Dave Ingram (12,340) got them off to a good start and wins for Jim Millward (11,140), Nigel Senior (13,200) and Dave Reeves made sure of the victory leaving Steve Mariner (10,380), Richard Wooton (13,600) and Chris Tupper to complete the whitewash. Mid-Sussex A made a bright start in their match against Tunbridge Wells at the Hurst Club with Adam Bateup (16,170) hitting the highest score so far this season and Andy Farmer-Wright (6,630) putting the home side 2-0 up, but the visitors hit back with wins for Doug Phillips (9.650), Ian Wright, Martin Leach (11,250) and Pete Sainsbury (13,550) to take the points back to Tunbridge Wells and leaving Derek Taylor (8,020) to take the last leg in consolation for the home side. The match between Redhill A and Worthing A was postponed.
Horsham maintained their 100% start to the season thanks to a close 4-3 win away to Eastbourne at the Hurst Arms. Dick Cable (5,790) put the visitors in front only for Eastbourne to sweep into a 3-1 lead thanks to wins for Peter Payne, Colin Southouse (6,190) and Roy Jenkins. Clive Thompson (5,420) and John Miller (5,370) levelled the match and Lee Cable won the decider for the visitors. Brighton B also have a 100% record after a 4-3 win over Littlehampton at the Albion, Alan Brackenridge (7,740) and Sandra Race (6,720) gave the home team a good start but Steve Beach (10,110) pulled the visitors back into the match. Bella Stoner (5,340) regained the initiative for the home side and although Dave Simmonds (5,820) won the next game a win for Terry Molloy made sure that the points stayed at home leaving Paul Clifford to win the last leg as consolation for the visitors. Worthing C gained their first win of the season thanks to a 4-3 win over Redhill B at The Gardeners. James Osbourne (6,010) claimed his first win in Inter League to give the home team the lead, although Graham Holman (5,630) quickly levelled the match. Steve Aymore (9,540) gained an important win against the break to put the home team in the lead and Rick Cunningham (8,370) made it 3-1, however a close win for Pete Nicholls pulled the visitors back into the match and Frank Doyle (7,520) forced the decider which Tony Jenner won for Worthing.
West Sussex got their season under way in Division 3 with a 4-3 home win over Brighton C. Kevin Charlton (9,830) got the home side off to a good start and wins for Trevor Fitzwilliam, Ivan Wheal and Martin Cole swept them into a 4-0 lead leaving Mick Pope (4,030), Brian Muggeridge and Sheena Wood to take the last 3 legs in consolation for the visitors. Billingshurst gained their first victory of the season with a close 4-3 win away to Lewes at the Bridge. Ric Bithell (5,610) gave the home side a good start only for Tony Temple and Chip Sawyer to win the next two games for the visitors. Dave Knight and Chase Newman won the next two games to put the home team back in front again but Steve Eely (5,030) forced the decider which Keith Newman won for the visitors in a close game against Kevin Stoner. Hastings however lead the table as they maintained their 100% start to the season with a 7-0 home win against Mid-Sussex B at the Ashburnham Arms. Mike Daw put the home side in front and Phil Osborne (7,730) got the better of Paul Jobbins (5,490) in the best game of the night to double that lead. Denis Cole and Dave White (9,580) made sure of the win allowing Vic Hibbon, Bob Osborne and Tony Gater to complete the whitewash.
Congratulations to New Sussex Hotel A who retained their AEBBA Team Championships title at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 23rd October. They started the day with a 4-1 win over Moneyfields Social Club (Hants) and although they lost 2-3 to Kennington Social Club (Oxon) a 5-0 win over the Imperial (Kent) took them through to the Final against Caversham WMC (Berks) who had won both the games in their group which consisted of Merstham Village Club (Surrey) and Queens Head (Bucks) with Burton Latimer CC (Northants) failing to turn up on the day. Kevin Hall and Geoff Jukes put the champions 2-0 up, however defeats for Rick Dewdney and Jim Greensted took the final to a decider. Kevin Tunstall played the table out for 20,050 which was enough to beat fellow England player Paul Sainsbury who broke down on about 14k in his reply.
Myra Hawkins (Berks) won the Special Ladies Competition beating Jenny Florey (Oxon) in the Final with Pauline Withey (Oxon) and Denise Wills (Surrey) the losing semi-finalists. Sandra Race was the only Sussex lady to reach the Quarter-Finals, although Ros Appleby did reach the final of the Plate Competition before losing to Janet Burns.
Kevin Tunstall maintained his superb run of form to add the AEBBA Alternate Rules title to the 5 Open Titles that he had already won this season on Sunday October 9th at the Post Office Club in Reading, beating Tony Webster (Hants) in the Final. Kevin had beaten Mark Trafford (Oxon) in the semi-finals and Tony Martin in the quarter-finals, while his opponent had defeated Sonia McIntyre and Dave Ingram at the same stages. Only five Sussex players made the trip up to Reading with Nigel Senior losing narrowly in the second round, while Hayley Tunstall and Lorenzo Hickman both made the semi-final of the Plate Competition before losing to Chris Newson (Hants) and Plate Winner Carla Jolly (Berks) respectively. Kevin also hit the highest break of 1,700 on the day in this interesting format of the game that is certainly very different to the normal Competitions.
The Ladies County Championships were played at the Post Office Club in Reading on Sunday 2nd October and gave us one of the most exciting finishes ever seen in an AEBBA National Competition.
In Division 1, Sussex A Ladies were seeking the 4th Consecutive title however a 3-2 defeat to Berks A was not the start that they were looking for. A good 3-2 victory over Oxon A meant that all four teams were level on 5 points after two matches, however a 3-2 defeat to the very strong Surrey A Ladies team while Oxon A beat Berks A meant that the Sussex Ladies had to win all of their last 3 matches to have a chance. A close 3-2 win over Berks A followed by another 3-2 win over Oxon A meant that Oxon A were on 14 points with Surrey A and Sussex A level on 13 points at the start of the last series, with Berks A in last place on 10 points. Jan Bithell maintained her 100% record on the day with a narrow win over her opponent and although Lorraine Hall and Jean Brackenridge both lost their games, Sandra Race won hers to keep the scores level and the news came through that Berks A were 3-1 up against Oxon A leaving all three teams level at the top on 15 points with just 1 player from each team left to play. At the half way stage of the last games, Debbie Barton (Oxon A) was well ahead in her match while Bella Stoner and Alison Norman (Surrey A) were almost level and locked in a battle to clear the balls from the back of the table…. Bella was the first to get the break back and ran in a good break to secure the win and a record 19th overall title for the Sussex A Ladies.
The Sussex B Ladies were competing in Division 2 this season and they also lost their opening game to Bucks 3-2. Another close 3-2 defeat to the strong Surrey B Ladies team followed, but a 3-2 win over Oxon B and a 4-1 win over Bucks put them back into contention. Unfortunately, only Ros Appleby (who won all of her games on the day) was the only winner in the return match against Surrey B which meant that they would be champions leaving Sussex B and Oxon B to play each other for the runners-up spot. A very close match followed, but with both Colleen Park and Jenny Edwards winning their games with last ball 200 hole winners, Sussex B emerged as winners with a 3-2 victory to end the day as runners-up.
