Sussex have now established themselves as serious contenders in division 1, too many times in the past their performances haven’t lived up to expectations, but not this time, if John Slee’s tight match against Ray Strugess of Oxon had gone our way than the title would have come to Sussex that’s how close it was. Barry Holt and Sue Mariner excelled, winning all their matches truly justifying their inclusion in the team.

In Division 2 Cambridge were absentees so it was decided that the 3 teams would play each other twice. This would seem to play into the hands of the vastly experienced Berkshire team, but Surrey had other ideas, winning all their matches including 2 wins over Berkshire. Berkshire must now spend another year in division 2. Surrey’s promotion means next years County champs will see 3 southern counties teams in Division 1.
