Sussex Inter League 1 day cup 2004 – Division 1

A good day for some…a not so good day for others…

Series 1:
Worthing took on Horsham, not much between these two teams as the result showed with Horsham coming out on top 8-6. Gareth Lloyd starting the day well with a 12k score on his break game. John Slee also rattled in 11k.
A strong Redhill team, which included Terry Oakley and Geoff Jukes, started with a big 10-4 win over Littlehampton, who were probably favorites to go down at this point. Barry Holt had the highest score in this match with 13,590.

Series 2:
Brighton sat out series 1 but now took on a warmed-up Worthing. Worthing won this title last year and were not about to let it go lightly. Worthing won 5 of the opening 7 legs, but Brighton came back well to take 5 of the next 7, to draw the match 7-7. Top score was 15,510 by Steve Mariner.
Following their 8-6 victory over Worthing, Horsham now took on Littlehampton. Littlehampton had to raise their game or it would have been down to Division 2 for them next season. They rose to the challenge and took the win 9-5. Top match being Barry Holt, who took both legs off Gareth Lloyd.

Series 3:
Brighton in the swing of things, now played the Horsham lads. Horsham took 4 of the first 7 legs and were looking good for the win, But they capitulated in their second legs, with Brighton winning 6 of the 7, for an unexpected 9-5 win. Best match saw Rick Dewdney play Chris Tupper, both players killing their leg first visit.

After sitting out, Redhill now played Worthing. With Redhill having won 10 legs in their first match, a win here would see them hard to catch. But a large lunch can weigh you down some what, and Redhill let themselves down, losing 5-9. Top matches saw Alan Messer v Alec Hastings, both players racking up 11k in their break game. Colin Robbins beat the vastly experienced Roger Taylor, who was struggling by his standards.

Series 4:

Things were starting to hot-up, and with Worthing beating Littlehampton 9-5 it looked grim for the Littlehampton boys, who had yet to play Brighton. Colin Tucker played at his best beating the luckless Roger Taylor 2-0. Dave France was having a good day, as he rolled in a 12k score. Worthing had now finished the day with a worthy 31 points.

Brighton now played Redhill, with Worthing stretching ahead, they needed a big win to give themselves a chance. With Alec Hastings rolling in a 13,900 break against Nigel Senior, and Geoff Jukes starting with 9k against Jim Millward, two of Brighton’s top boys were left watching. Young Chris Reeves held his nerve well to win a tight leg against Ken Wilkinson. Then with Steve Mariner making 14k on the tricky pub table, Brighton had somehow amassed a flattering 10-4 win. This all but killed off Redhill’s challenge.

Series 5:

Worthing having finished had to sit out and watch to see if Littlehampton could beat Brighton and stop them winning. It started well for the Littlehampton lads, as they won 4 of the opening 7 legs. But Brighton stood firm, with Chris Tupper winning both legs against Colin Tucker, and Jim Millward finally working out the rolls on table 3, Brighton did enough to draw 7-7 and finish on 33 points, 2 ahead of Worthing.

With Littlehampton winning 7 legs against Brighton, this condemned Horsham to Division 2, as they were hammered 11-3 by Redhill. Terry Oakley shone with 2 scores over 13k.

Let us all thank Alan Messer for his tireless work over the 2 weekends. Have no mistake, without him there would have been no competitions.

A Special mentions to some of the younger players of the 2 weekends… Well done to Richard Wooton for winning all 8 legs in Division 2, Richard averaging over 7,000 per leg. Well done to Glen Chubb who put in a 13k break in the B-teams cup. Well done to Chris Reeves, only 17 but already a formidable opponent and he’s getting better by the week. Well done also to Rick Dewdney, a future Sussex player in the making no for sure…
